1.00Can I do decorative painting on previously finished/varnished antiques?
Q.I have an old dresser, probably from the 30's, that I want to do some decorative painting on. I'm planning to use regular acrylic paints. Do I need to sand the spots I'll be painting and prime them in any way, or can I just paint directly over the old stain and varnish? What kind of sealer should I use on the whole piece when I'm done? I'd like to avoid stripping the whole piece, I like the color and the way it looks, I just want to add to it.
A.I never paint over varnished furniture. I always sand it down and prime it.
The parts that get painted (if you want the best look and the best quality finish) need to be sanded, primed, painted, then sealed.
If you want the parts that you paint to have the same kind of finish (like, gloss) you can buy different sheens of sealer. There is, satin finish, semi-gloss and high-gloss. If the unpainted finished wood is not shiny at all you can wax the painted part using paste finishing wax. Minwax brand is good.

1.00How much per square ft. shoul i pay a painting contractor to prime path and paint my home it is 1712 sq.ft. ex
Q.When a painting contractor bids a job what price per square ft are they charging and is that price multiplied by the amount of coats he puts on
A.The contractor should bid per square foot on what you are asking for regarding coats - if you specify one primer coat and one paint coat, that's it. If you ask for two, that should be what the contractor bids on. Make sure it is very clear in the contract.
Also, this will vary so much even in the same area, and depends on what you are asking for. Specify number of coats, what brand, type, and color paint you want used, application method, etc., and have it written on the contract before you accept their work. Also, are you asking for decorative paint, or just for someone to come in and spray on white? Is prep work included (ie: scraping, filling, sanding, or pressure washing?)
You should get at least three quotes from painters in your area, all based on the same info. References are good, too.
1.00On exterior windows, how can you put the decorative lines to give a more colonial feel?
Q.I just bought a very old city colonial with new replacement windows. However, they look very boxy and uninteresting. There aren't any grooves in the window to insert decorative lines. Do you have any other suggestions on putting lines on new windows to give it a colonial feel? Thanks so much!
A.I'm not sure where you buy it now but they make a self-adhesive tape which imitates the look of leaded glass. I'd call some local glass shops. If they don't have it, they can probably order it.

1.00Is it possible to remove acrylic paint from canvas without damaging the rest of the painting?
Q.My husband is painting a picture for his parents for Christmas and has messed up a small part of the painting, He's tried painting over it, but can't get the right shade anymore. He's using acrylics. Is there a way to remove that small area of paint, without damaging the rest of the painting so that he can redo it?
A.I teach acrylic painting lessons and use this medium daily. Acrylic has a plastic blend and when it dries it's not coming off. Keep working on matching the colors where the problem area is. Just layer the colors little by little...be patient it will come together. I just finished a painting of a pair of beagles...the owner of the painting wanted me to change the color of the hair coat on one of the dogs. Which meant I had to basically start my layering all over from scratch. So I did this and worked on it for a few hours and it came together and the owner was happy with the results.

If you want to paint your home, but the old uniform colors, swathes and paint brochure route leaves you uninspired, maybe it's time for a radical change in the way you look at your walls. Professional faux artists see walls not as drab surfaces to be painted on but a canvas to unleash their artistry. Professional faux or decorative painters are a breed apart from regular painters. They make use of innovative and artistic techniques to give your walls the texture of velvet or to turn your ceilings to marble. These techniques obviously may not come cheap, but if you want a home that's truly breathtaking, faux and textured wall finishes are the way to go.
For those who are bored with the same wall and ceiling colors and crave a change, faux, decorative and texture paints may be the answer. These faux wall finishes and specialty finishes transform ordinary surfaces into works of art. With faux painting and finishing techniques, walls can be "marbleized", or made to resemble printed wallpaper. You can have walls that look like crushed velvet or adorned with grand murals. These decorative walls require the services of decorative painting professionals who are trained not just in painting but also the trained in the principles of inferior decor and theatrical set construction.
Tired of the same old same old paint on your walls and ceilings? Want to transform your house dramatically but don't know where to start? Then read on. Decorative wall paints and faux finishes are a breed apart from regular paints. These painting techniques include innovative processes that resemble various textures like marble, velvet and silk. Surfaces can be made to resemble wall paper, or gilded gold or metal tones. Textures can include zig zags, dimples or granulated effects.
Decorative and textured painting techniques can include a number of innovative methods, some of which are simpler to try but others that are more intricate and call for professional craftsmanship. Old world parchment faux finishes makes use of a multi color faux palette with the help of pads to add character adding veins and cracks easily. On the other hand, color washing in multiple colors is a less cumbersome and less messy method that makes use of a multi-color faux palette and pad for high rise walls up to 12 feet. Sponging is an old, conventional but reliable method of faux finishing walls with a natural sea sponge. This is a great way for adding texture to walls, enabling 6 colors at a time in texturing. Ragging is a very popular method in which a rag is used to texture the wall surfaces to create a desired combination of colors. Stenciling is an age old method for art work that allows for creating flowers and designs of multiple choices
Specialty or decorative painting is an altogether different branch of painting. Decorative and faux artists make use of intricate and highly specialized processes to make walls look like antique surfaces or give them a marble look. You can recreate the look of parchment paper or give surfaces a granulated texture. Whatever you choose you can rest assured that you walls will cease to be merely walls, but they will morph into works of art. You can choose from textured finishes that give your walls a crushed velvet look or a mottled feel, or you can use rags and sponges to give a multiple color effect. Murals are another specialized decorative painting choice. They can be expensive but are more than worth the price for home owners who want their homes to be a class apart.
Decorative wall painting or specialty finishes can take on many different processes. Walls can be dabbed with sponges or rags to create a dapple color effect or give surfaces zig zags or paneling or other finishes. Walls can be made to replicate the look of antique homes or parchment paper complete with cracks and veins. If you like wall paper but don't care for the installation and removal, consider a wall finish that resembles the finest printed wallpaper without any of the mess of sticking it up and taking it off. Murals can add a new dimension to any room and there's virtually no end to the designs you could choose. The Trompe L'oeil technique can be used to create the illusion of doorways, pillars and columns, gardens and other Tuscan style architectural details that add depth to your room.
